Mere Christians: Inspiring Stories of Encounters with C. S. Lewis Paperback – February 1, 2009 by Andrew Lazo (Editor), Mary Anne Phemister (Editor)

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world. – CS Lewis

C. S. Lewis continues to hold remarkable appeal to people from all walks of life, with books by and about Lewis remaining perennially popular. Arguably no author of the twentieth century has had a greater spiritual impact on more people than Lewis. Mere Christians explores this influence through personal accounts from fifty-five Christians whose spiritual lives have been dramatically altered by reading Lewis’s books. The contributors include ordinary laypeople as well as well-known leaders and writers including Charles Colson, Anne Rice, Jill Briscoe, George Gallup Jr., Philip Yancey, and many more. This unique collection shines new light on the impact of Lewis’s work and will be of wide interest to his many fans.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough if you are one of those persons who sometimes feels that you are living in a world haunted by an “otherness” that our common relationships and words cannot address.  During different chapters of my own life I have had that sense that something lay just on the other side of the hill, around the corner, or through some door in my mind and perception.  CS Lewis has been a traveling companion for many years.  This book is a series of “sharings” by some very well read and fully experienced individuals, from scientists, engineers, business professionals, professors, pastors, and poets, who have also found that Lewis has the uncanny knack for guiding souls who are in search for the true depth and meaning of life – which is Christ.  Perhaps you have a young person, or a skeptic, or a regular companion with whom you sometimes share conversations about life, doubt, and faith.  This book might be a very good beginning for a new kind of conversation.  I do hope that you will give it a try.

I am very grateful to those who took the time to look back upon their decisive moments, who “bent the knee” of their hearts and minds in offering gratitude to one of the great souls – CS Lewis.  With them, I look forward to my own reunion with Lewis when I reach heaven, Aslan’s country; where I know we will meet as old friends, and laugh, and share the deepest satisfaction that a human life might gather – the satisfaction of knowing that we have accepted the invitation offered by a loving God, and by God’s grace alone, have found the courage and grace to accept it.  Blessings and Godspeed be with you.
